Android: Set Up Fingerprint Unlock

If the fingerprint option in your security settings stays greyed out, Android is blocking it until a backup unlock method like a PIN or pattern exists. Without that backup method, the sensor has nothing to fall back on and the system refuses to register a print at all.

Set Up Fingerprint Unlock auf Android

Android treats fingerprint unlock as a shortcut on top of a screen lock, not a replacement for one. If no PIN, password or pattern is active yet, the fingerprint option in the security menu appears disabled or is missing entirely, because the system needs a fallback method to store the encrypted print against.

To register a fingerprint, open Tap on SettingsTap on Security & privacyTap on Device unlockTap on Fingerprint Unlock. Confirm the choice at Tap on Fingerprint Unlock, accept the terms with Tap on I agree, then select Tap on Start and follow the instructions on screen to begin scanning.

During the scan, lift and place the same finger repeatedly until the progress indicator fills. A partial or smudged read is the most common reason the process stalls halfway. Once finished, the fingerprint becomes an additional unlock option alongside the PIN, password or pattern you set up earlier, and you can add more prints from the same menu later.

Frequently asked questions

A wet, greasy or partially placed finger interrupts the scan progress. Dry your finger, press the full pad flat on the sensor, and repeat until the ring in Tap on Start and follow the instructions on screen fills completely.
