Android: Turn Google Location Accuracy On or Off

If your phone places you several streets away from where you actually are, Google Location Accuracy is likely switched off. This feature scans nearby Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals to sharpen your GPS fix, which matters most indoors or between tall buildings. Turning it off can save a little battery but makes maps, navigation and location-based apps noticeably less precise.

Turn Google Location Accuracy On or Off auf Android

Google Location Accuracy uses nearby Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices as extra reference points for positioning. Instead of relying on GPS satellites alone, your phone compares visible networks against Google's location database and narrows down your position much faster, especially indoors, in parking garages or dense city blocks.

When this setting is off, Android falls back on GPS and mobile network data only. That works fine outdoors with a clear sky view, but accuracy can drop to a radius of dozens of meters in built-up areas or buildings.

To check or change the setting, go to SettingsLocationLocation servicesGoogle Location Accuracy, then toggle Improve Location Accuracy on or off.

Enable it if you rely on precise turn-by-turn navigation, fitness tracking or apps that need tight positioning. Leave it off if you mainly want GPS for rough location and prefer to limit background Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning.

Google notes that with the feature enabled, anonymized location data may be collected periodically to keep its positioning database current. This is separate from your regular Location History and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth scanning settings, which you can manage independently.

Frequently asked questions

Navigation still works with it off, but the initial GPS fix can take longer and your position on the map may lag slightly, especially right after leaving a building or tunnel.
