Android: Turn Nearby Share On or Off

If your Android phone keeps scanning for nearby devices even with Bluetooth switched off, Nearby Share is usually running in the background. Random pop-ups asking to connect to a stranger's device or share files come from this constant device visibility search. Turning the feature off or limiting who can see your device stops these unwanted prompts.

Turn Nearby Share On or Off auf Android

Nearby Share runs a constant background scan for other Android devices, independent of the classic Bluetooth toggle. This is why pop-ups asking to connect or share files can appear even after you have switched Bluetooth off in quick settings.

The feature relies on a separate visibility setting located inside Connected devices. Disabling it stops the scan completely, while switching visibility to a limited option lets you keep transfers available for your own trusted hardware without broadcasting to everyone nearby.

To adjust it, go to Tap on SettingsTap on Connected devicesTap on Connection preferencesTap on Nearby ShareEnable or disable Device visibility.

If you only want to stop the pop-ups temporarily, changing visibility to a hidden option is often enough and keeps Nearby Share ready for quick reactivation later. Turning the whole feature off makes more sense if you never use it for file transfers and want to save battery from the constant scanning.

Keep in mind that disabling Nearby Share also blocks incoming shares from other people until you switch it back on.
