Android: Reset Your Advertising ID

If ads on your phone feel oddly specific to your recent searches or app activity, the advertising ID behind them has likely stayed the same for months. This ID lets ad networks link your behavior across apps into one profile, even without your name attached. Resetting it breaks that link and forces advertisers to start a fresh profile.

Reset Advertising ID auf Android

Every Android phone carries an advertising ID, a randomized string that apps and ad networks read to build a profile of your habits. Unlike your device serial number, this ID is meant to be resettable, but most people never touch it, so it silently links activity across dozens of apps for years.

A new advertising ID does not remove existing profiles ad companies already built. It only stops them from adding new data under the old identifier going forward. Apps have to request the ID again after a reset, and some ad-supported apps may temporarily show less relevant ads until a new profile forms.

To reset it, open SettingsSecurity & privacyPrivacyAdsReset advertising IDConfirm.

This setting lives under privacy controls rather than app permissions, so it is easy to overlook. If you are troubleshooting excessive personalized ads or want a clean break before selling or handing over the device, this is the right control. It will not fix location tracking or app permissions, those need separate adjustments.

Frequently asked questions

No. It only stops future tracking from linking to the old ID. Data tied to the previous ID stays with whoever collected it.
