How does OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) work?

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) uses gyroscope sensors to detect real-time movement of the smartphone. A small motor then shifts the lens or image sensor in the opposite direction of the detected shake, typically via magnets or piezoelectric actuators. This keeps the light path stable on the sensor during exposure, even with slight hand tremor.

The key advantage over purely digital stabilization (EIS) is that OIS acts before the image is captured, discarding no image data. This allows longer exposure times without blur, which matters most for night shots, telephoto zoom photos, and handheld video.

OIS systems vary in correction range and speed, usually measured in stops (e.g., 3–4 EV). Flagship smartphones often combine OIS with EIS for maximum stability: the optical stage handles large movements, while digital processing smooths the rest. This hybrid stabilization has become standard in premium camera systems.
