RAM (Random Access Memory): Definition & explanation

RAM is your smartphone's working memory that temporarily stores active apps and processes. More RAM lets you keep more apps open simultaneously without them reloading.

How does RAM (Random Access Memory) work?

RAM (Random Access Memory) is volatile memory that loses all data once the device powers off. Unlike internal storage (UFS), which permanently holds photos, apps, and files, RAM acts as a short-term workspace for the processor (SoC). When you open an app, the system loads its data from UFS storage into RAM because access there is much faster. Switching between apps keeps them active in the background in RAM, so returning to them doesn't require a full reload. If RAM runs low, the operating system closes background apps to free space for new processes. Modern smartphones use between 4 GB and 16 GB of RAM, with the ideal amount depending heavily on usage patterns: heavy multitaskers, gamers, and professional app users benefit from more RAM. For everyday tasks like browsing and messaging, 6–8 GB is usually sufficient. Some manufacturers also offer virtual RAM, which uses part of internal storage as extra working memory — though this is slower than real RAM and not a full substitute.
