Huawei: Turn Automatic App Updates On or Off

If apps on your Huawei phone keep updating over mobile data and eating into your data plan, the Auto-update apps setting in the Play Store is set too broadly. The same setting also explains why apps stop updating entirely once you are off Wi-Fi. Adjusting it lets you decide exactly when and how updates get installed.

Enable or Disable Automatic App Updates auf Huawei

Automatic app updates on Huawei phones run through the Play Store, not through EMUI itself. By default, the Play Store only downloads and installs updates when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi, which keeps mobile data usage low but can leave apps outdated if you rarely connect to a wireless network.

This setting also controls the opposite problem. If you notice apps updating unexpectedly and burning through your data allowance, the auto-update option has likely been switched to allow any network connection.

Where to change it

Open the Play Store app, then tap on Open the menu in the top corner. From there, go to Open the settings and select Tap on Auto-update apps. You get three options: Over any network, Over Wi-Fi only or Don't auto-update apps. Pick the one that fits your data plan and confirm with Done.

Choosing Don't auto-update apps gives you full manual control but means you have to check for updates yourself, which can leave apps running outdated code for longer. Over Wi-Fi only is the balanced default for most users. Over any network makes sense only if you have an unlimited data plan or need critical updates immediately, for example security patches for banking apps.

Individual apps can also be excluded from auto-updates on their own store page, which is useful if one specific app causes issues after updates while the rest should still update normally.
