Huawei: Turn Emergency Location Service On or Off

When you dial an emergency number or send an SOS text, your Huawei phone normally shares its location automatically so responders can find you faster. If Google Location Services are turned off, Emergency Location Service (ELS) steps in to determine your position instead, and whether it is active or not can matter in a real emergency. Many people never check this toggle until they need it.

Enable or Disable Emergency Location Service (ELS) auf Huawei

Emergency Location Service (ELS) is a background function built into EMUI on Huawei phones. It only activates when you place an emergency call or send an emergency text, and it works independently from the regular Google Location Services toggle.

If Google Location Services are switched off, EMUI can still use ELS to calculate an approximate position from cell towers, Wi-Fi networks and GPS signals, then send that data to emergency services and first responders. This happens automatically in the background without asking for confirmation, since the goal is getting coordinates to rescue teams as fast as possible.

To check or change the setting, open Open the SettingsTap on LocationTap on Emergency Location ServiceEnable or disable Send ELS Location. Turning it on keeps this fallback active even when location services are disabled elsewhere. Turning it off removes that fallback, so dispatchers only get whatever information your carrier can pull from the call itself.

Leave ELS enabled if you often travel, hike or drive through areas with patchy coverage. Disable it only if you have strict privacy reasons and accept that responders might need longer to locate you.

Frequently asked questions

No. ELS runs as a separate system function in EMUI and stays available through Open the SettingsTap on LocationTap on Emergency Location Service even when the main Google Location Services toggle is off.
