Huawei: Set Up Fingerprint Unlock

If your Huawei phone still asks for a pattern, PIN or password every time you wake the screen, fingerprint unlock probably has not been set up yet. Huawei phones require an existing backup unlock method before a fingerprint can be registered, since the print alone is never used as the sole security layer. Without that fallback in place, the fingerprint menu blocks you from adding a print at all.

Set Up Fingerprint Unlock auf Huawei

Fingerprint unlock on Huawei phones only works once a screen lock defined by pattern, PIN or password already exists. That method acts as a fallback whenever the sensor fails to recognize your finger, for example with wet or dirty hands, so EMUI will not let you register a print without it first.

To add a fingerprint, open the settings and tap on Biometric & password. From there tap on Fingerprint ID, then Fingerprint management. Type in your PIN to confirm your identity, activate Unlock device and follow the instructions on the display to scan your finger from different angles.

Once enrolled, the fingerprint can unlock the phone, confirm app purchases and sign in to supported apps, no matter which finger you registered. You can add several fingerprints, useful if more than one person unlocks the same device or if you want a backup finger stored.

If the sensor keeps failing to read a print, or if you plan to lend the phone to someone else temporarily, keeping the PIN or pattern as the main unlock method is often more reliable than relying on fingerprint alone.

Frequently asked questions

Clean the sensor and your finger, then try enrolling the fingerprint again from Fingerprint management. Your PIN or pattern still unlocks the phone as a fallback.
