Huawei: Set Up Gesture Input on the SwiftKey Keyboard

If the SwiftKey keyboard on your Huawei phone still forces you to tap every single letter, gesture input is either switched off or set to the wrong mode. Huawei offers two swipe based typing styles: Flow lets you glide from letter to letter to form whole words, while Gestures maps swipes to quick actions like deleting a word or hiding the keyboard. Mixing these two modes up usually explains why swiping feels unpredictable while you type.

Set Up Gesture Input auf Huawei

Gesture input on Huawei phones runs through the built-in SwiftKey keyboard, not through a separate app. Two swipe styles are available and they behave very differently, which is why typing can feel broken if the wrong one is active.

Flow lets you drag your finger from letter to letter without lifting it, and the keyboard predicts the word you meant. Gestures maps specific swipe directions to actions, such as swiping left to delete the last word or swiping down to close the keyboard. If Flow is active, those directional swipe actions get overridden by letter tracing instead, which is the usual reason a swipe suddenly deletes a word instead of typing one.

Where to change it

Open Open the settingsTap on System & updatesTap on Language & inputTap on SwiftKey KeyboardTap on TypingTap on Typing & autocorrectTap on Gesture inputChoose an option.

From that screen you can switch between Flow and Gestures, or turn gesture input off entirely if you prefer tapping each key. If autocorrect keeps interfering with word predictions while using Flow, check the autocorrect settings on the same Typing & autocorrect screen rather than the gesture option itself.

Frequently asked questions

Flow turns swiping into a way of forming whole words by tracing letters, while Gestures assigns single swipe directions to actions like deleting a word or hiding the keyboard. Only one mode is active at a time under Gesture input.
