Huawei: Change the Default Phone App for Calls

If a third-party dialer or call-recording app does not open automatically when you tap a contact or make a call, your Huawei phone is likely still routing calls through the built-in Phone app. Some apps offer caller ID, spam blocking, or call recording that only work once they are set as the default. Android lets you switch the default calling app in the system settings at any time.

Set Default Phone App auf Huawei

On Huawei phones running EMUI, the built-in Phone app is set as the system default for calls and messages. Third-party dialers, spam-blocking tools, or call-recording apps only take over dialing and incoming-call handling once Android registers them as the default calling app.

The setting lives in the general app management area, not inside the dialer itself. Installing a new phone app from the Google Play Store is not enough on its own - Android keeps using the previous default until you switch it manually.

To change it: Open the SettingsTap on AppsTap on Default appsTap on Phone appChoose the default Phone app. Select the app you want to use for calls, and Android routes future calls and contact taps through it.

If calls still open in the old app afterward, check whether the new app has all required permissions, since Android can silently fall back to the previous default when permissions are missing.

Switching the default phone app does not affect your contacts or call history, but some features of the previous dialer, like custom blocklists, may stop working until you set them up again in the new app.
