Huawei: Enable Fingerprint Sensor as Camera Shutter

Taking selfies or group shots on a Huawei phone often means stretching a thumb across the screen for the shutter button while the frame shifts. The fingerprint sensor can act as that trigger instead, but the switch for it lives inside a security menu, not the camera app, so most people never find it.

Fingerprint Sensor as Camera Shutter auf Huawei

On Huawei phones running EMUI, the fingerprint reader is registered inside the biometrics module, not the camera settings. When the shutter option is switched on, holding a finger on the sensor sends the same signal as tapping the on-screen shutter button.

This is why the setting is easy to miss. It sits next to unlock and payment permissions, grouped under security rather than photography. Once active, it works in both photo and video mode: a short hold takes a picture, a longer hold starts recording.

To turn the function on or off:

Open the SettingsTap on Biometrics & passwordTap on Fingerprint IDEnable or disable Take a photo/video

If you only use the sensor to unlock the phone, leaving this option disabled prevents accidental captures whenever you rest a finger on it. If group photos or shaky one-handed shots are the issue, enabling it removes the need to reach for the screen at all.

Some devices restrict this feature to the rear fingerprint placement and disable it automatically for in-display sensors, since those areas overlap with other screen gestures.

Yes, once Take a photo/video is enabled under Fingerprint ID, the trigger works for both the front and rear camera as long as the camera app is open.
