Huawei: Unmount Memory Card Safely

Pulling the memory card out of your Huawei phone while it is still active can corrupt photos, videos or app data stored on it. This happens because the system may still be writing to the card in the background, even if no app is visibly open. Ejecting it properly first closes every open connection before you remove the card.

Unmount Memory Card Safely auf Huawei

A memory card stores data through constant read and write processes, even when you are not actively using it. Background tasks such as photo backups, media indexing or app caching can access the card at any moment.

If you pull the card out during one of these processes, the file system on the card can become corrupted. This can lead to missing photos, broken video files or an unreadable card the next time you insert it.

Unmounting the card in the system settings tells EMUI to stop every read and write process and safely disconnect the card. Only after this step is it safe to remove the card physically.

Where to find the unmount option

Go to Open the settingsTap on StorageTap on Memory cardTap on Unmount. Once the confirmation appears, the card is disconnected from the system and you can remove it from the tray.

This step matters most before moving the card to another device, such as a laptop or a second smartphone. It also helps if the card shows errors or does not appear correctly after inserting it again.

Frequently asked questions

Open files on the card can become corrupted, and any app currently writing to the card, such as a camera app saving a photo, may lose that data. In most cases the card still works afterward, but damaged files are not recoverable.
