OnePlus: Change the Gboard Keyboard Height

If you turned on the extra number row in Gboard, the keyboard on your OnePlus phone can suddenly take up a large chunk of the screen. That leaves less room to read messages while typing and can feel cramped on smaller displays. Gboard offers several height presets, from Extra-short up to Normal and beyond, so you can pick a size that matches your hand and screen.

Change Keyboard Height auf OnePlus

On OnePlus phones running OxygenOS, Gboard sizes itself automatically based on your display and any extra rows you have enabled, like the number key line. That automatic sizing often makes the keyboard taller than needed, covering more of the chat or app below it than you would like.

Gboard includes a manual height setting that overrides this default behavior. You will find it under the keyboard preferences, separate from general display or font size settings, which is why many people never notice it.

To change it: Open the SettingsTap on SystemTap on Languages & inputTap on Virtual keyboardTap on GboardTap on PreferencesTap on Keyboard heightSet the keyboard height.

From there you can move between presets such as Extra-short, Short, Mid-short, and Normal, along with taller options above Normal. A smaller height frees up screen space but shrinks each key, which can affect typing accuracy if you have larger hands.

If typing errors persist after adjusting height, check whether a third-party keyboard app is installed and active instead of Gboard, since this setting only applies to Gboard itself.

Frequently asked questions

No. The height setting scales the whole keyboard, but the extra number row stays enabled or disabled independently under Preferences in Gboard.
