Change Wallpaper on Lock Screen
Your lock screen still shows the same picture as your home screen even though you picked a new photo? Samsung phones let you set the lock screen wallpaper separately from the home screen, and you can even queue up several images so a new one appears every time you wake the display. Missing that separate step is the usual reason the lock screen never updates.
Allow or Deny Picture-in-Picture Access
If a video keeps playing in a floating window even after you close the app, or that floating window never shows up at all, the picture-in-picture permission for the app is set the wrong way. Samsung manages this per app, separate from the general multitasking settings, so one app can float freely while another stays blocked. Checking this permission clears up both problems in a few taps.
Add Emergency Contacts
If your phone is locked during an emergency, nobody can reach the people you trust unless they are saved as emergency contacts. Samsung ties this list to your Contacts profile, not to your regular address book, so numbers you already have saved will not show up on their own. Without this setup, SOS messages and lock-screen emergency calls have nobody to go to.
Make a Phone Call from the Dialer
If you are not sure how to start a call on your Samsung phone, the process runs through the dialer keypad, not just the contacts list. A missing or inactive SIM card is the most common reason a call will not connect, even when the number is entered correctly. Once the SIM is active, both manually typed numbers and saved contacts work the same way.
Turn Off Developer Options
Once Developer options are enabled on a Samsung phone, they stay in Settings even if you never touch them again. The extra menu entry does not affect performance or battery life, but some users prefer a clean settings list without it.
Turn Call Barring On or Off
If your Samsung phone keeps rejecting calls while roaming or blocks all outgoing calls without an obvious reason, Call barring is likely active in the background. This network-level restriction can lock out specific call types entirely, and changing it requires a network password from your carrier rather than your screen lock. Voice calls and video calls are controlled separately, which often causes confusion when only one type is affected.
Create a Local Backup to SD Card
If your Samsung phone has no internet connection or you would rather skip Samsung Cloud and Google entirely, a local backup on the SD card or internal storage fills that gap. It runs on the External storage transfer function, which shares its engine with Smart Switch, so the file can later restore straight onto another Samsung device. This is worth doing before a factory reset, a SIM swap, or whenever cloud storage is full.
Change SMS Input Mode (GSM or Unicode)
If a single text turns into two or three messages the moment you add an emoji, the input mode set for text messages is the reason. GSM alphabet only covers basic Latin characters, so any emoji or special symbol forces the message to switch encoding and split. Automatic or Unicode mode prevents that, but it can affect how many messages you get billed for.
Add a Printer by IP Address
If a printer never shows up in Samsung's Default Print Service, that model is likely not supported by the built-in driver list. Without a manual entry, print jobs simply fail or the printer never appears as an option. This mostly affects office, network, and older printers that the standard service does not recognize automatically.
Manage Sleeping Apps
If a messaging app suddenly stops pushing notifications or a tracking app won't sync overnight, One UI may have put it to sleep. Background usage limits on Samsung phones can pause individual apps completely, so they neither update nor notify until you open them again. Knowing whether an app sits in Sleeping, Deep sleeping, or Never sleeping explains a lot of missed alerts.
Turn Video Stabilization On or Off
If your videos look shaky despite recording handheld, or clips from the main camera suddenly seem oddly smoothed and slightly cropped, Video stabilization is the setting behind it. Samsung enables this correction by default, but only on the main camera, so footage from other lenses will not look the same. In fast pans or low light it can also introduce a subtle wobble or crop that some people prefer to turn off.
Add or Remove Edge Panels
The Edge panel on your Samsung phone comes with a handful of panels active out of the box, but not every panel you might want is enabled - and you might be stuck with ones you never touch, like the calendar or direct dial panel. Extra panels, including a calculator panel, are available for free through the Galaxy Store but stay invisible until you select them in the panel list. Swiping in from the edge and seeing the wrong panels, or too few of them, usually just means the panel selection needs an update.
Turn Fast Charging On or Off
If your Samsung phone gets noticeably warm while charging or you worry about long-term battery wear, Fast charging in the battery settings is usually the reason. Leaving it active while the phone sits on the charger overnight adds unnecessary heat and stress to the battery for no real benefit.
Customize Lock Screen Notification Style
By default, Samsung phones show a small app icon on the lock screen for every new notification, without any details. If you want to see who messaged you or read a preview before unlocking, that icon-only view can feel too limited. One UI lets you switch between a compact icon and a full notification card, including options for hiding content or adjusting background transparency.
Change Keyboard Mode on Samsung
Typing with one hand on a large screen turns into a stretching exercise when the Samsung keyboard stays locked to its full-width standard layout. The one-handed keyboard and floating keyboard fix reachability, but the toggle sits buried inside a settings menu most people never open.
Set Side Key to End Calls
Reaching across the screen to hang up gets annoying fast, especially with one hand full or the phone mounted somewhere out of reach. Samsung phones can end calls with a single press of the side key, but this option stays off by default. Until you switch it on, pressing the side key during a call just locks the screen or triggers whatever shortcut you set up elsewhere.
Auto-Download MMS Toggle
If picture or video messages start downloading the moment they arrive, even over mobile data you would rather save, Samsung's Auto retrieve setting for multimedia messages is doing exactly what it's built for. Turning it off means MMS content stays queued until you decide to load it yourself.
Print a Photo from the Gallery
If the Print option in your Gallery stays greyed out or no printer shows up, the built-in printing service on your Samsung phone or tablet is not finding a compatible printer. This happens most often when the printer is on a different network or the print plugin has not been set up yet. The result is that photos, PDFs or other files never reach the printer, even though the Print button is right there in the share menu.
Remove a Synced Account
When you disconnect from a service like Facebook on your Samsung phone, the app itself often stays signed in because the account is still linked in the system settings. This happens because Samsung keeps every added account - email, cloud, social media - in one central list that also controls background sync. Removing it there is the only way to stop the syncing and fully disconnect the account from the device.
Default Reminder Time for Calendar Events
Every new event in Samsung Calendar starts with a reminder set to 10 minutes before, and all-day events default to 5 p.m. the day before. If you keep adjusting these values by hand for each new entry, the app is falling back on its built-in alert defaults instead of your preferred timing. Changing the default once removes the need to reset the reminder every time you add an event.
Show Passwords While Typing
On Samsung phones, each password character flashes briefly on screen before turning into an asterisk. That preview helps you catch typos, but it also means anyone glancing at your display can read the character. Some users prefer to switch that flash off entirely so nothing ever appears on screen.
Enable or Disable Edge Lighting
When calls or messages stop lighting up the curved edge of your Samsung display, Edge lighting is usually switched off. The feature normally triggers a colored glow along the screen border, on an active or inactive display, and lets you adjust style, color, duration, and transparency per app. Once it is disabled, none of those visual alerts show up anymore.
Change Media Volume Separately from Ringtone
Videos on YouTube, music apps, and most in-app sounds all run through Media volume, not the ringtone or notification stream. That is why turning your phone silent for calls does not stop a video from blasting through the speaker. If the volume buttons seem to control the wrong sound depending on what is open, this Media stream is the reason.
Set an Alarm
If you only see one alarm on your Samsung phone, it looks like you're stuck with a single wake-up time. The Clock app actually lets you add as many separate alarms as you need, each with its own time, days, name, tone and vibration pattern, but the option to create a new one isn't always where you expect it to be.
