Add Emergency Contacts
If your phone is locked during an emergency, nobody can reach the people you trust unless they are saved as emergency contacts. Samsung ties this list to your Contacts profile, not to your regular address book, so numbers you already have saved will not show up on their own. Without this setup, SOS messages and lock-screen emergency calls have nobody to go to.
Make a Phone Call from the Dialer
If you are not sure how to start a call on your Samsung phone, the process runs through the dialer keypad, not just the contacts list. A missing or inactive SIM card is the most common reason a call will not connect, even when the number is entered correctly. Once the SIM is active, both manually typed numbers and saved contacts work the same way.
Enable or Disable Google Voice Typing
If the microphone icon is missing from your Samsung keyboard, Google voice typing is probably switched off in the keyboard settings. This feature turns spoken words into text while you type, but only works once it is active under Language and input. You can switch it on or off at any point without changing your default keyboard app.
Turn Off Developer Options
Once Developer options are enabled on a Samsung phone, they stay in Settings even if you never touch them again. The extra menu entry does not affect performance or battery life, but some users prefer a clean settings list without it.
Turn Call Barring On or Off
If your Samsung phone keeps rejecting calls while roaming or blocks all outgoing calls without an obvious reason, Call barring is likely active in the background. This network-level restriction can lock out specific call types entirely, and changing it requires a network password from your carrier rather than your screen lock. Voice calls and video calls are controlled separately, which often causes confusion when only one type is affected.
Change Edge Panel Position
By default, the Edge panel and its handle sit on the right edge of your Samsung screen. If that spot gets in the way of your grip or another gesture, you can swap the handle to the left edge and slide it up or down instead of living with the factory position.
Manage Sleeping Apps
If a messaging app suddenly stops pushing notifications or a tracking app won't sync overnight, One UI may have put it to sleep. Background usage limits on Samsung phones can pause individual apps completely, so they neither update nor notify until you open them again. Knowing whether an app sits in Sleeping, Deep sleeping, or Never sleeping explains a lot of missed alerts.
Turn Video Stabilization On or Off
If your videos look shaky despite recording handheld, or clips from the main camera suddenly seem oddly smoothed and slightly cropped, Video stabilization is the setting behind it. Samsung enables this correction by default, but only on the main camera, so footage from other lenses will not look the same. In fast pans or low light it can also introduce a subtle wobble or crop that some people prefer to turn off.
Add or Remove Edge Panels
The Edge panel on your Samsung phone comes with a handful of panels active out of the box, but not every panel you might want is enabled - and you might be stuck with ones you never touch, like the calendar or direct dial panel. Extra panels, including a calculator panel, are available for free through the Galaxy Store but stay invisible until you select them in the panel list. Swiping in from the edge and seeing the wrong panels, or too few of them, usually just means the panel selection needs an update.
Turn Fast Charging On or Off
If your Samsung phone gets noticeably warm while charging or you worry about long-term battery wear, Fast charging in the battery settings is usually the reason. Leaving it active while the phone sits on the charger overnight adds unnecessary heat and stress to the battery for no real benefit.
Turn Dark Mode On or Off in Samsung Internet
If Samsung Internet still opens in a bright white layout even though your phone runs a dark theme, the browser has its own separate dark mode toggle. Some users only find a system-wide switch and assume the browser has no dark option at all, while others get a dark browser frame but pages still render bright. The setting sits inside the browser app itself, not in the general display settings.
Allow Apps to Use Data While Data Saver Is On
When Data saver is active on a Samsung phone, background data gets cut for most apps, which often causes delayed messages, missing notifications or apps that refuse to sync until you open them manually. This happens because Data saver blocks mobile data in the background by default, even for apps you actually rely on. A few apps can be whitelisted individually so they keep working normally while the rest of your data stays restricted.
Change Keyboard Mode on Samsung
Typing with one hand on a large screen turns into a stretching exercise when the Samsung keyboard stays locked to its full-width standard layout. The one-handed keyboard and floating keyboard fix reachability, but the toggle sits buried inside a settings menu most people never open.
Turn Bluetooth Tethering On or Off
If your tablet, laptop, or smartwatch can't get online through your phone's Bluetooth connection, Bluetooth tethering is probably switched off. This feature turns your phone into a small Bluetooth hotspot and shares its mobile data with every paired device automatically.
Auto-Download MMS Toggle
If picture or video messages start downloading the moment they arrive, even over mobile data you would rather save, Samsung's Auto retrieve setting for multimedia messages is doing exactly what it's built for. Turning it off means MMS content stays queued until you decide to load it yourself.
Print a Photo from the Gallery
If the Print option in your Gallery stays greyed out or no printer shows up, the built-in printing service on your Samsung phone or tablet is not finding a compatible printer. This happens most often when the printer is on a different network or the print plugin has not been set up yet. The result is that photos, PDFs or other files never reach the printer, even though the Print button is right there in the share menu.
Navigation Bar Button Order
If the Back and Recent apps buttons feel swapped on your Samsung phone, it is not a bug, the navigation bar just uses a layout you are not used to. Samsung only lets you mirror the whole button row, not rearrange each icon freely. Knowing this limit saves you from searching for a setting that does not exist.
Enable or Disable Edge Lighting
When calls or messages stop lighting up the curved edge of your Samsung display, Edge lighting is usually switched off. The feature normally triggers a colored glow along the screen border, on an active or inactive display, and lets you adjust style, color, duration, and transparency per app. Once it is disabled, none of those visual alerts show up anymore.
Reset Accessibility Settings
If Voice Assistant keeps reading out screen content, mono audio mixes both channels together, or color and contrast tweaks stay active without a clear reason, several accessibility options are probably still switched on from an earlier setup. Turning each toggle off manually is slow and easy to get wrong. The keyboard is not affected by this, so typing issues need a different fix.
Set Custom App Icons
If your home screen still shows the default Samsung icon set even after installing an icon pack from the Galaxy Store, the pack is downloaded but not switched on yet. One UI keeps custom icon sets separate from your current app grid until you apply them manually inside the Themes app. No root access or third-party launcher is required to activate them.
Switch Camera Mode
Stuck on Photo mode and cannot find Panorama, Night, or Pro on your Samsung camera? Many of these modes sit behind a More menu instead of showing in the main swipe bar, which makes them easy to overlook. This is especially confusing on devices that also offer extra modes like Food or Hyperlapse next to the standard Photo and Video options.
Turn On/Off Data Warning
If your Samsung phone flags a data warning even though you barely touched mobile data, or the alert never shows up before your plan runs out, the built-in threshold is likely misconfigured. This warning works independently from any actual data cap, so leaving it off does not stop overage charges from your carrier. A wrong or missing threshold value is the usual reason the alert fires too early or too late.
Add Apps to Secure Folder
Apps you drop directly into Secure Folder often seem to vanish - they never turn up in the regular app list or in your device settings. That is expected: Secure Folder keeps its content in a separate, Knox-protected space, so an app can exist twice on the same phone without either copy sharing data.
Turn Alternative Characters On or Off
If the Samsung Keyboard suddenly swaps letters for symbols like the question mark, plus sign, or euro symbol while you type, the Alternative characters function is active. This can slow you down when you need letters and numbers mixed together, for example in passwords or addresses. A setting inside the keyboard layout controls whether this swap happens automatically.
