Add a Keyboard Language
Your Samsung keyboard only offers the system language by default, so a German-language phone types German everywhere, even in messages you want to write in English or another language. Switching between alphabets or typing foreign words forces constant autocorrect fights. The fix sits in the Samsung Keyboard settings, but the option to add extra input languages is buried several menus deep and easy to miss.
Allow or Deny Picture-in-Picture Access
If a video keeps playing in a floating window even after you close the app, or that floating window never shows up at all, the picture-in-picture permission for the app is set the wrong way. Samsung manages this per app, separate from the general multitasking settings, so one app can float freely while another stays blocked. Checking this permission clears up both problems in a few taps.
Make a Phone Call from the Dialer
If you are not sure how to start a call on your Samsung phone, the process runs through the dialer keypad, not just the contacts list. A missing or inactive SIM card is the most common reason a call will not connect, even when the number is entered correctly. Once the SIM is active, both manually typed numbers and saved contacts work the same way.
Enable or Disable Google Voice Typing
If the microphone icon is missing from your Samsung keyboard, Google voice typing is probably switched off in the keyboard settings. This feature turns spoken words into text while you type, but only works once it is active under Language and input. You can switch it on or off at any point without changing your default keyboard app.
Change Timer Sound
If the timer on your Samsung phone always plays the same tone, no matter which alarm or reminder you set, the Clock app is likely still using its default Timer sound. You can swap it for another preset tone or a custom sound file, but the option sits inside a separate sound menu that many people never open.
Create a Local Backup to SD Card
If your Samsung phone has no internet connection or you would rather skip Samsung Cloud and Google entirely, a local backup on the SD card or internal storage fills that gap. It runs on the External storage transfer function, which shares its engine with Smart Switch, so the file can later restore straight onto another Samsung device. This is worth doing before a factory reset, a SIM swap, or whenever cloud storage is full.
Change SMS Input Mode (GSM or Unicode)
If a single text turns into two or three messages the moment you add an emoji, the input mode set for text messages is the reason. GSM alphabet only covers basic Latin characters, so any emoji or special symbol forces the message to switch encoding and split. Automatic or Unicode mode prevents that, but it can affect how many messages you get billed for.
Add or Remove Edge Panels
The Edge panel on your Samsung phone comes with a handful of panels active out of the box, but not every panel you might want is enabled - and you might be stuck with ones you never touch, like the calendar or direct dial panel. Extra panels, including a calculator panel, are available for free through the Galaxy Store but stay invisible until you select them in the panel list. Swiping in from the edge and seeing the wrong panels, or too few of them, usually just means the panel selection needs an update.
Turn Dark Mode On or Off in Samsung Internet
If Samsung Internet still opens in a bright white layout even though your phone runs a dark theme, the browser has its own separate dark mode toggle. Some users only find a system-wide switch and assume the browser has no dark option at all, while others get a dark browser frame but pages still render bright. The setting sits inside the browser app itself, not in the general display settings.
Set the Volume Key Function in Camera
Pressing the side volume buttons on your Samsung phone snaps a photo or starts recording a video by default, which can surprise you while you're just trying to hold the phone steady. If you'd rather zoom in and out or control the system volume with those same buttons, the camera app has a separate setting for that. Getting this wrong means accidental presses either waste shots or leave you without quick volume access.
Allow Repeat Callers in Do Not Disturb
When Do Not Disturb is on, your Samsung phone silences every incoming call, even from someone trying to reach you urgently. The Repeat callers exception is meant to let a second call from the same number through within 15 minutes, but many users find it either missing or not working as expected. Knowing where this setting lives helps you decide when silence is too strict.
Turn On Automatic Backup to Samsung Cloud
If your Samsung phone only gets backed up when you remember to trigger it manually, automatic backup to Samsung Cloud is probably switched off. The Auto back up function saves selected categories like contacts, photos or app data on a schedule, but each category has its own toggle. Skip one setting and that data type stops being backed up even while the rest keeps running.
Adjust Screen Timeout
If your Samsung display keeps dimming or locking while you are still reading, the screen timeout is set too short for your habits. On most Samsung phones the display switches off after 30 seconds by default, which feels rushed when scrolling through long articles or recipes. The right timeout value depends on how you use your phone and how much battery life you want to keep in reserve.
Set Side Key to End Calls
Reaching across the screen to hang up gets annoying fast, especially with one hand full or the phone mounted somewhere out of reach. Samsung phones can end calls with a single press of the side key, but this option stays off by default. Until you switch it on, pressing the side key during a call just locks the screen or triggers whatever shortcut you set up elsewhere.
Navigation Bar Button Order
If the Back and Recent apps buttons feel swapped on your Samsung phone, it is not a bug, the navigation bar just uses a layout you are not used to. Samsung only lets you mirror the whole button row, not rearrange each icon freely. Knowing this limit saves you from searching for a setting that does not exist.
Custom Notification Sound per App
On Samsung phones every app can technically get its own notification sound, but only if that app requests separate notification categories from the system. Apps that bundle everything into one generic channel keep the sound picker greyed out no matter what you try. That leaves you guessing whether a buzz is a message, a reaction, or a system alert.
Change Media Volume Separately from Ringtone
Videos on YouTube, music apps, and most in-app sounds all run through Media volume, not the ringtone or notification stream. That is why turning your phone silent for calls does not stop a video from blasting through the speaker. If the volume buttons seem to control the wrong sound depending on what is open, this Media stream is the reason.
Install Ad Blocker in Samsung Internet
If every page load buries the content under banners, pop-ups, and autoplay video ads, Samsung Internet is missing an ad blocker extension. The browser does not filter ads on its own, so pages stay cluttered and load slower until you add one yourself. Some heavy ad-driven sites can even make scrolling feel laggy on older devices.
Switch Camera Mode
Stuck on Photo mode and cannot find Panorama, Night, or Pro on your Samsung camera? Many of these modes sit behind a More menu instead of showing in the main swipe bar, which makes them easy to overlook. This is especially confusing on devices that also offer extra modes like Food or Hyperlapse next to the standard Photo and Video options.
Search for a Word in a Message Conversation
Scrolling through a long text thread to find one phone number, address or name wastes time. Samsung's Messages app has a hidden search function inside each conversation that jumps straight to matching text. Matches get a white highlight and arrow controls let you step through every result without leaving the chat.
Change Camera Storage Location
If your Samsung phone keeps saving new photos and videos to the SD card even though you want them on internal storage, the default save location in the camera app is set to the memory card. Switching this setting only affects future shots. Anything already saved to the card stays there and does not move automatically.
Auto Factory Reset Setting
If your Samsung phone wipes itself after too many failed unlock attempts, the Auto factory reset option in your lock screen security settings is responsible. This safety feature erases all data once you exceed the allowed number of incorrect PIN, pattern, or password entries, and it can catch you off guard if you or someone else keeps mistyping your lock code.
Set Default Dialer App
If you install a third-party calling app but Samsung's own Phone app still opens for calls and messages, the default dialer assignment hasn't changed yet. This also affects which app handles your call log and dial pad, similar to how default apps work for Home, Browser or Messages. A screen lock can sometimes stop an alternative dialer from launching calls correctly.
Turn Speak Passwords On or Off in TalkBack
TalkBack normally reads every letter you type aloud, but password fields are treated differently and stay silent by default. If you want TalkBack to announce password characters too, that behavior is hidden behind a separate switch in the TalkBack settings.
