Set an App Timer to Limit App Usage
Some apps quietly eat hours of your day without you noticing, especially social media or games that keep notifications pulling you back in. On Xiaomi phones there is no built-in reminder that tells you when an app has crossed a healthy usage limit. Digital Wellbeing lets you assign a daily time budget per app so it pauses itself once that budget runs out.
Change App Icon Size
If the home screen on your Xiaomi phone feels cluttered or the icons look too small to tap comfortably, MIUI lets you adjust that directly from the home screen settings. The icon size is controlled by a slider, so you can fine-tune it instead of picking from a few fixed presets. Getting this wrong can shift your grid layout or cut off app names underneath the icons.
Turn Battery Drain Notifications On or Off
If your Xiaomi phone keeps popping up alerts about fast battery drain, or you never get one and expect to, this setting is the reason. Battery drain notifications warn you when an app or background process burns through power faster than normal. Left enabled, unrelated background tasks can trigger these alerts more often than you would like.
Set Swipe-from-Edge Action in Mi Browser
Swiping in from the left or right edge of the screen in Mi Browser normally sends you back or forward a page, and that can get in the way if you actually meant to switch tabs. Xiaomi lets you reassign this edge gesture in Mi Browser or turn it off completely if it keeps triggering by accident.
Assign Google Assistant to the Power Button
On some Xiaomi phones a short press of the Power button opens the power menu instead of Google Assistant, even though full screen gesture navigation is active. This happens because the button shortcut for Google Assistant sits in a separate settings section and stays off by default. Without enabling it, you still need the home button gesture or voice command to wake the Assistant.
Change Home or Lock Screen Theme
If your Home screen, Lock screen, and app icons suddenly look inconsistent after switching themes, MIUI applied only part of the new theme's assets. This happens when a saved theme only covers some elements, like Lock screen and System, but skips Icons. Picking the wrong theme ('Classic' vs 'Limitless') or a corrupted download can also leave icons untouched while wallpapers change.
Turn Camera Grid Lines On or Off
If your photos keep coming out tilted or the horizon never lines up straight, you are probably shooting without any framing guide. Xiaomi's camera app can overlay a 3x3 grid that helps you keep verticals upright and place the horizon on a clean line. Without it, minor tilts are easy to miss on a small screen and only show up later when you check the shot on a bigger display.
Change Keyboard Layout in MIUI
If your Xiaomi keyboard still types QWERTY while you actually need QWERTZ, AZERTY or another layout, every second word ends up misspelled. MIUI lets you switch or add layouts per language, including Dvorak, Colemak, Neo2 and a plain PC layout, but the setting is buried several menus deep inside the keyboard options. Handwriting input is listed there too, in case none of the fixed layouts match how you type.
Sort Contacts by First or Last Name
If your Xiaomi contact list feels out of order, it usually comes down to whether the Contacts app is sorting entries by first name or last name. This becomes a real problem when you are searching for someone by their surname but the list is alphabetized by given name instead. The rule that controls this sits in one setting inside the Contacts app.
Turn On/Off Traffic Mode
If a background download eats up bandwidth while you are streaming or on a video call, your Xiaomi phone might be sharing the connection equally between all apps. Traffic mode in the Wi-Fi assistant lets you decide whether the app you are actively using gets priority over background traffic. Without it enabled, downloads and updates can slow down whatever you are doing in the foreground.
Turn Notification Badges On or Off Per App
A red dot keeps sitting above an app icon even after you have opened every message inside it. On Xiaomi phones this badge is a separate switch from the notification itself, so muting an app does not always remove the counter. If the dot never clears, or shows up for an app you barely use, the badge toggle for that specific app is still turned on.
Set Pop-up Window Action Timeout
If a pop-up window or temporary app alert disappears before you can tap a button, or lingers on screen far longer than needed, the accessibility timeout is set too short or too long for how you use your phone. This value decides how much reaction time you get on prompts that show up briefly and then close on their own. MIUI lets you adjust this timing instead of leaving it on the default.
Turn Do Not Disturb On or Off
When Do Not Disturb is active on your Xiaomi phone, calls get an instant busy signal and every notification stays silent, even for messages you actually want to hear. Many people leave it on by accident after enabling it for a meeting or at night, since MIUI does not always show a clear reminder that it is still running. Checking the current status and switching it off takes just a few taps in Sound & vibration settings.
Add Games or Apps to Game Turbo Manually
When a freshly installed game does not show up in Game Turbo, the automatic detection has missed it. This also happens with non-gaming apps you want to run under Game Turbo performance settings. Manually adding the app closes that gap without waiting for a system scan.
Add Extra Contact Details
Only a phone number and name saved for a contact leaves out useful extras like birthday, nickname, or a website link. On Xiaomi phones, MIUI hides these optional fields behind the standard edit screen, so you never see them unless you go looking. Without filling them in, calls and messages only ever show the bare minimum information for that person.
Change Time Format
If your Xiaomi phone shows time in a format you did not choose, MIUI is likely following your system language setting automatically. This means the clock can jump between 12-hour and 24-hour display whenever you change language or region. You can lock the format manually so it stays consistent no matter what language MIUI is set to.
Delete a Single SMS Message
Deleting a whole conversation wipes out every message in that thread, even the ones you still need. Sometimes you only want one text gone, like an old verification code or a message sent to the wrong person. On Xiaomi phones, single messages inside a conversation can be removed without touching the rest of the thread.
Turn On/Off Gesture Confirmation
Swiping back or closing an app by accident during a full-screen game or a video can throw you straight out of the action. On Xiaomi phones with full-screen gesture control, this usually happens because gesture confirmation is turned off, so a single swipe is enough to trigger the action. Turning it on forces you to swipe twice before the gesture actually executes.
Keyboard Vibration Settings
If every tap on the on-screen keyboard triggers a buzz that feels too strong or too weak, or typing feedback vanished after an update, the keyboard's Haptic feedback on keypress setting is usually the cause. This option runs independently from your general system vibration, so toggling System vibration alone will not fix it. Notifications and Focus mode profiles do not touch this setting either, since it lives inside the keyboard app itself.
Add a Time Stamp to Photos
Photos taken with your Xiaomi phone often show no date or time, making it hard to prove exactly when a picture was captured. This is controlled by the Watermark option inside the Camera app, which stays off by default on most MIUI devices. Without it enabled, every shot leaves the gallery without any timestamp overlay.
Connect to Wi-Fi Using a QR Code
Typing out a long Wi-Fi password on a Xiaomi phone gets tedious, especially with mixed case letters and symbols. If the network owner has a QR code ready, you can skip the password field entirely by scanning it with the built-in Wi-Fi scanner.
Set Up Text-to-Speech Output
When TalkBack or Select to Speak reads content in the wrong language or sounds too fast, the text-to-speech engine on your Xiaomi phone is set to the wrong voice or rate. Pitch, speed and language all come from one shared accessibility setting, so a single wrong value affects every screen-reading feature at once. Fixing it stops garbled or mismatched speech without disabling accessibility features entirely.
Change Keyboard Theme (Language & Input)
If the Gboard keyboard on your Xiaomi phone still shows the default gray background, the theme setting has never been switched. This only changes the visual layout - colors, gradients or picture backgrounds - and has no effect on autocorrect or typing speed. The key borders can also be turned on or off separately from the overall theme.
Show SIM Card Messages
Old text messages from years back sometimes stay on the SIM card instead of moving into the phone's internal storage. If you swap the SIM into a new Xiaomi phone, those messages do not show up in your normal inbox automatically, so it looks like they are gone.
