Android: Change the Default Launcher App

If you install a new launcher from the Google Play Store but the Home button still loads your old home screen, Android has not switched its default. The system keeps a stored preference for which launcher should run and does not update it automatically after installation. The result is missing widgets, a mismatched icon grid, or the old layout reappearing whenever you leave an app.

Change the Default Launcher App auf Android

When you install a new launcher, Android does not automatically load it after setup. The system keeps a stored preference for the Home app and only updates it once you actively confirm the change.

This preference lives in the Default apps section of the system settings, separate from general app permissions. If this step is skipped, the Home button and app drawer keep pointing to the previous launcher, even if the new one appears installed and fully configured.

To switch, open SettingsAppsDefault appsHome app and select the launcher you want to use as the Default home app. The change applies immediately, and pressing the Home button reloads the new interface right away.

Switching launchers usually resets widget placement and app shortcuts, since each launcher stores its own layout data. Icons, folders, and grid settings from the old launcher generally do not carry over. If a launcher is missing from the list, reinstall it or check that it has not been disabled under App info.

Frequently asked questions

Android only lists launchers that declare themselves as home screen replacements. If the app is missing, confirm it is fully installed and not disabled in SettingsAppsLauncher name.
