Android: Change the Gboard Keyboard Height

Gboard height controls how much vertical screen space the on-screen keyboard uses. A taller keyboard gives bigger keys and fewer typos, but it covers more of the chat or text field above it. A shorter keyboard shows more content on screen at once, which helps on smaller phones or in apps where you need to see more text while typing.

Change it through: Settings ➔ System ➔ Languages and input ➔ On-screen keyboard ➔ Gboard ➔ Preferences ➔ Keyboard height. From there, pick one of seven sizes: Extra short, Short, Mid-short, Normal, Mid-tall, Tall, or Extra tall. Each option previews live, so you can compare sizes before confirming.

Choose a taller size if you often mistype letters or use the keyboard with one thumb. Choose a shorter size if you need more visible content above the keyboard, for example when editing long messages or reading chat history while replying.

Google removed this menu starting with Android 14, replacing it with automatic sizing based on screen size and split-screen mode. If your phone does not show Keyboard height under Preferences, your Gboard version no longer supports manual resizing.
