Android: Set a Password for Your Wi-Fi Hotspot

If your Wi-Fi hotspot has no password or still uses the default one, anyone nearby can join and eat into your mobile data. Android assigns a password automatically when you turn on the hotspot, but plenty of users never check or change it. A weak or missing password leaves your connection and data plan open to strangers within range.

Set a Wi-Fi Hotspot Password auf Android

A Wi-Fi hotspot shares your phone's mobile data with other devices over a local Wi-Fi network. Android protects this connection with a password, but the default one is often weak or easy to guess if you never changed it.

Anyone who knows or guesses that password can join your hotspot, use your data allowance, and potentially access other devices on the same network. Changing the password regularly, especially after sharing it with guests, keeps the hotspot under your control.

Where to change it

Go to Open the settingsTap on Network & InternetTap on Hotspot & tetheringTap on Wi-Fi hotspotTap on Hotspot password. Enter a new password and confirm with OK.

Use at least eight characters and mix letters with numbers. Devices that were already connected with the old password get disconnected and need the new one to reconnect.

If your hotspot still runs slow or drops connections after securing it, check how many devices are connected at once, since Android limits the maximum number of simultaneous users.

Frequently asked questions

Android requires a minimum of eight characters for the Hotspot password field. A mix of letters and numbers makes it harder to guess.
