Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) is a power-efficient wireless standard for connecting devices like smartphones, smartwatches, or earbuds. It transmits small amounts of data with minimal power draw instead of high bandwidth.

How does Bluetooth LE work?

Bluetooth LE was designed specifically for devices that rarely send large amounts of data but need to run on a small battery for a long time — such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, sensors, or smart home devices. Unlike Classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE keeps the connection mostly idle and only briefly activates it when data needs to be transferred. This drastically reduces power consumption while maintaining similar range (typically 10–30 meters, more with newer versions). Smartphones use Bluetooth LE for communication with wearables, wireless earbuds, health sensors, or location tracking via beacons. Since Bluetooth 4.0, LE has been part of the standard; newer versions like Bluetooth 5.x offer higher data rates, extended range, and improved mesh functionality for connected devices. Bluetooth LE is not backward compatible with Classic Bluetooth, though many chips support both modes in parallel (Dual Mode).
