Cloud Backup: Definition & explanation

In a nutshell

A cloud backup automatically stores photos, contacts, and app data on a provider's remote servers. This keeps data safe even if the device is lost or damaged and allows restoration on new devices.

How does Cloud Backup work?

With a cloud backup, the smartphone transfers data such as photos, videos, contacts, calendars, app settings, and sometimes messages over the internet to a cloud provider's servers (e.g., Google Drive, iCloud, Samsung Cloud), typically encrypted. This usually happens automatically in the background once the device connects to Wi-Fi and there's enough storage available in the cloud account. Users can configure which data types are backed up and how often—often daily or with every change.

When setting up a new device or after a factory reset, the backup can be easily restored: after signing in with the cloud account, the device downloads the stored data and largely recreates the previous state. Storage capacity is limited depending on the provider and plan—free tiers often only cover basic data, while large photo libraries require additional paid storage.

Data security depends on encryption during transfer and storage, as well as the provider's trustworthiness regarding privacy practices and server location.
