Geotagging is the automatic embedding of GPS coordinates into a photo's or video's metadata. It records the exact location where the shot was taken.

How does Geotagging work?

When location access is enabled, a smartphone uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular data to determine latitude and longitude. These coordinates are stored alongside timestamp, camera settings, and other technical details in the file's EXIF metadata. Gallery apps and cloud services can then automatically map photos or sort them by location. Third-party photo apps and social networks also read this metadata, unless it was stripped beforehand. Geotagging typically runs in the background once an app has location permission, and can be toggled in camera settings. Accuracy depends on GPS signal, surroundings, and device model. When photos are shared online, location data often remains embedded unnoticed, potentially revealing home address, workplace, or movement patterns. For this reason, many platforms like messengers and social networks automatically strip EXIF data on upload, while email attachments or cloud backups usually transfer files unchanged, keeping the original metadata intact.
