HEIF / HEVC: Definition & explanation

HEIF is a modern image format, HEVC (H.265) a video codec. Both compress more efficiently than older standards like JPEG or H.264, saving significant storage space at comparable quality.

How does HEIF / HEVC work?

HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) and HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) are modern compression standards introduced around 2013–2015 to replace older formats. HEIF often uses HEVC-based technology internally for image compression and can store multiple images, depth data, or Live Photos in a single file. Compared to JPEG, HEIF achieves better image quality at the same file size, or roughly half the file size at equal quality. HEVC works similarly for video: it replaces the older H.264 standard and cuts data rate by up to 50 percent at the same resolution, which matters especially for 4K and HDR footage. Apple has used HEIF/HEVC by default since iOS 11, and Android devices support both formats too, usually as an optional setting. The improved compression relies on more complex motion-prediction and block-partitioning algorithms, requiring more processing power for encoding and decoding. Older devices, operating systems, or software often can't open HEIF/HEVC files directly, so many systems automatically convert to JPEG or H.264 when sharing. HEVC, unlike open formats such as AV1, is also subject to licensing fees, which slows adoption in some areas.
