LCD: Definition & explanation

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a display technology using liquid crystals to block or transmit light. Since pixels don't emit light themselves, a separate backlight is always required.
How does LCD work?
LCD screens consist of a layer of liquid crystal molecules sandwiched between two polarizing filters. Applying electrical voltage changes the orientation of the crystals, controlling how much light passes through each pixel. Since liquid crystals don't generate light themselves, every LCD needs an LED backlight shining constantly behind the panel — even for black content. This fundamentally differs from OLED/AMOLED, where each pixel emits its own light.
Smartphones typically use IPS-LCD panels, which offer good viewing angles and stable color reproduction. Image quality depends heavily on panel quality, peak brightness, and pixel density (PPI). LCDs are cheaper to manufacture than OLED panels, making them common in entry-level and mid-range devices. Downsides include lower contrast, since black is never fully black (residual light leakage), and typically thicker builds due to the backlight layer. Modern flagship smartphones increasingly favor AMOLED, while LCD remains important in budget-friendly devices.
