An ultra-wide lens captures a much larger field of view (typically 110–130°) than a standard camera. It's ideal for landscapes, architecture, and group shots in tight spaces.

How does Ultra-Wide Angle work?

Ultra-wide cameras use a short focal length to fit more scene content onto the sensor than a standard lens. Smartphones typically add a separate lens with a smaller sensor and lower megapixel count, often lacking optical zoom or autofocus. Typical field of view ranges from 110° to 130°, compared to roughly 70–80° on the main camera. The short focal length causes characteristic edge distortion, which software partially corrects. Modern systems also align color, sharpness, and exposure between the main and ultra-wide cameras so zoom transitions look seamless. Because less light hits each pixel and sensors are often smaller, low-light image quality is usually weaker than the main camera. Ultra-wide is mainly used for landscapes, architecture, interiors, and creative perspectives with exaggerated depth. On some devices, combined with macro mode, it also enables close-up shots at short focus distances.
