How does Megapixel (MP) work?
Megapixel (MP) refers to the number of image points that make up a photo – one megapixel equals one million pixels. A 48 MP sensor produces images with about 48 million pixels, giving more flexibility for cropping and digital zoom. However, actual image quality depends on more than pixel count: sensor size, individual pixel size, lens aperture, and image processing all play a major role. A small sensor packed with many megapixels divides its surface into very tiny pixels, which increases noise in low light. That's why many modern smartphones use pixel binning: several neighboring pixels are merged into one larger pixel to capture more light in darkness, at the cost of nominal resolution. This turns a 48 MP sensor into 12 MP photos with improved low-light performance. For everyday use, 12 to 16 MP is more than enough for sharp photos on screens and standard prints. Higher megapixel counts mainly pay off for heavy cropping, large poster prints, or compensating for a missing telephoto lens through digital zoom.
