Allow App Installs From External Sources
Trying to install an APK outside the AppGallery or Play Store often gets blocked by a security warning on Huawei phones. This happens because the permission to install apps from external sources is switched off for each app individually. Until you enable it for the specific app you used to download the file, sideloading stays blocked, even if the file itself is safe.
Unrestricted Data Access for Apps
If a messaging or sync app on your Huawei phone only updates over Wi-Fi and stays silent on mobile data, background data restrictions are usually the cause. EMUI applies data-saving rules per app, which can delay notifications or block downloads until you open the app manually. Unrestricted data access removes that limit for individual apps.
Enable or Disable Private Browsing Mode
If your browsing history, cookies and search suggestions keep piling up on your Huawei phone, the built-in browser is probably still running in normal mode instead of Private mode. Private mode darkens the interface and wipes out history, cookies and open tabs the moment you close them, but it will not hide your activity from your mobile carrier or the sites you visit. Knowing exactly where this switch sits saves you from clearing your history by hand after every session.
Set Default SIM for Calls
When your Huawei phone runs two SIM cards, calls placed through Quick dial or other shortcuts do not always go out over the SIM you expect. Without a fixed default calling SIM, EMUI picks a card automatically, which can lead to unwanted roaming charges or calls made from the wrong number.
Delete Saved Wi-Fi Networks
If your Huawei phone keeps jumping onto an old guest network instead of your home Wi-Fi, a leftover saved connection is usually to blame. Enable or Disable Call Barring
Roaming abroad often means every incoming call and every accidental international dial gets billed at premium rates, even calls you never answer. Huawei phones let you block specific call types at the network level instead of just muting notifications. The setting sits deep in the Phone app and is easy to miss if you have never needed it before.
Set Default Browser App
If tapping a link in a message or email keeps opening Huawei Browser instead of Chrome, Firefox or Opera, the system default app was never switched. EMUI decides which browser handles outside links independently of which apps you have installed. Downloading a new browser from the Play Store alone does not change this setting.
Flip to Mute Timers and Alarms
If an alarm or timer keeps ringing even after you grab the phone, flipping it face-down usually should silence it instantly. On many Huawei phones this motion gesture is turned off by default, so the ringing continues no matter how you place the device.
Colour Inversion
If colour inversion switches on by accident, a white background with black text flips to a black background with white text across the whole screen. Photos, videos and other media get affected too and can look washed out or plain wrong. This toggle sits inside the accessibility features, so it is easy to miss and just as easy to fix once you find it.
Raise to Wake: Enable or Disable Screen Wake by Lifting
If your Huawei screen stays dark when you pick the phone up, or it keeps waking on its own during normal handling, the raise to wake behavior is likely set the wrong way. This function reads the motion sensor and turns the display on the moment the device is lifted or tilted. Even when raise to wake is active, a lock screen still needs a PIN or password before you get past it.
Draw Over Other Apps Permission
When Facebook Messenger shows a chat bubble with the sender's photo while you are using another app, that overlay relies on a specific system permission. On EMUI you can grant or block this permission separately for every installed app. Without it, overlay bubbles, floating widgets or in-call popups simply stop appearing.
Enable or Disable SIM PIN
If your Huawei phone asks for the SIM PIN right after you ask for the screen lock code or pattern, you are dealing with two separate security layers at once. The SIM PIN protects the card itself, independent from the phone lock, which means both prompts can appear back to back at every restart. That extra step is often unwanted once you trust the environment where you use the phone.
Turn Stay Connected On or Off When Device Sleeps
If your Huawei phone keeps draining mobile data or battery after the screen goes dark, the Stay connected when device sleeps option in Battery settings is usually behind it. With it enabled, EMUI keeps your Wi-Fi or mobile data link active in the background even while the display is off. Switching it off can stretch standby time, but some messaging apps may then deliver notifications later than usual.
Turn Flashlight On or Off
The LED flash next to your camera lens can double as a flashlight, but many Huawei owners cannot find a quick way to switch it on without opening the camera app first. The toggle actually lives in the notification shade, not in a dedicated app or settings menu. If the icon looks greyed out or does not react to taps, something else is usually blocking it.
Write System Settings: App Access
If a third-party app cannot adjust brightness, rotation or other system values on your Huawei phone, it usually lacks the Write system settings permission. EMUI blocks this special access by default for most apps outside a trusted set. You decide per app whether it can change system settings, and turning it off for one app does not affect the others.
Screenshot Sound: Enable or Disable
Every time you take a screenshot on your Huawei phone, a short shutter sound plays automatically. In a meeting, lecture or library, that tone can feel disruptive or draw attention you did not want.
Enable or Disable Automatic Brightness
If your Huawei display stays too dark indoors or glares in direct sunlight, automatic brightness is likely fighting your manual settings. The sensor reacts to ambient light and readjusts the screen on its own, which can feel unpredictable if you prefer fixed brightness levels.
Set Default SMS Messages App
If a new messaging app you installed from the Google Play Store never actually receives your texts, the old app is probably still set as default. Huawei phones send every SMS and MMS through whichever app is marked as the standard, no matter how many others sit on your home screen. Answer Calls with the Fingerprint Sensor

Huawei phones can accept a call with a long press on the fingerprint sensor, but this option is usually switched off by default. Managing several user profiles on a Huawei phone gets confusing once you are past the initial setup. Right after creating a new account, the phone asks directly if you want to switch, but that prompt only appears once. Enable or Disable Activity Controls
If Google keeps showing personalized search results and ads based on your browsing, an activity control like Web is switched on somewhere in your account. On EMUI phones you don't need a browser to check this, since the same setting sits inside the phone's own privacy menu. Turning it off stops that specific activity type from being saved and used for future recommendations.
Force Stop an App
When an app on a Huawei phone freezes or the app switcher does not fully close it, the process keeps running in the background. This can drain battery, block notifications from other apps, or cause the screen to stay stuck. A force stop shuts the app down completely instead of just minimizing it.
Emoji Access on Enter Key
If the emoji icon is missing from your Huawei keyboard, you can still reach emojis through the enter key, but only if that shortcut is switched on. This setting decides whether the return key doubles as an emoji trigger in apps like WhatsApp or Messenger, and it can silently turn off after a keyboard update.
Format Memory Card
A new memory card in your Huawei phone often shows up empty or throws a 'not formatted' warning before you can save anything to it. Existing files stay untouched until you format the card, and formatting also builds the folder structure needed for photos, apps and backups. This step deletes everything already stored on the card, so back up anything important first.
