Huawei: Create a Custom Contact Group

If your contact list on a Huawei phone keeps growing, finding the right people for a group text or a shared ringtone gets messy fast. Without a dedicated group, you end up selecting contacts one by one every time you want to message a team, a family circle, or your closest friends. EMUI lets you bundle contacts into named groups, but the option sits a few taps away from where most people expect it.

Create a Contact Group auf Huawei

Sending a message to several people at once or hearing a specific ringtone for certain callers only works if those contacts belong to a group first. On Huawei phones running EMUI, this grouping happens inside the Contacts app rather than in the Messages app itself, which is why many users miss the option.

Open the Contacts app on your Huawei phone. Tap on Groups to see any existing groups you may have created before.

Tap on New to start a fresh group. You then need to Choose an account the group should be linked to, since contacts can be stored under different accounts on the same phone.

Enter a name for the group, for example Work or Family, and tap OK to save it. The group now appears in your list and you can add contacts to it directly from the group screen.

Once contacts are grouped, you can send a group SMS to everyone at once or assign a custom ringtone to the whole group, so you instantly recognize who is calling without checking the screen.

Frequently asked questions

Group creation on Huawei phones happens in the Contacts app under Groups, not inside Messages. Once the group exists, you can select it as a recipient when sending a text.
