Huawei: Turn On Read Text on Images via Select to Speak

Read text on images is a sub-function of Select to speak inside the Accessibility settings on Huawei phones. Once active, the phone can read printed text aloud from photos stored on the device or directly through the camera viewfinder.

The feature relies on the Android Accessibility Suite, which needs explicit permission to capture what is shown on screen. Without that permission, the option stays greyed out or simply does nothing when you try to use it, even if you switched it on in the menu.

To find and toggle the setting, go to Open the Settings ➔ Tap on Accessibility features ➔ Tap on Accessibility ➔ Tap on Select to speak ➔ Tap on More settings ➔ Enable or disable Read text on images ➔ Tap on Continue ➔ Tap on Start now.

Because this is an experimental function, expect occasional misreads, especially with small fonts, low contrast, or handwritten text. If accuracy matters more than speed, use a dedicated text-scanning app instead.

Turning the option off again removes the read-aloud action from photos and the camera view, but leaves the rest of Select to speak untouched, so screen reading for apps and menus keeps working as before.
