Every time you tap a link, open a photo, or receive a text message, your Realme phone has to decide which app handles that action. This decision is based on a system called default apps. Android keeps a list of preferred apps for common actions like browsing, messaging, calling, and opening files, and Realme UI builds directly on this system with its own settings menu for managing it.
A default app is simply the program your phone launches automatically for a specific type of task, without asking you every time. Without defaults, your phone would show a chooser popup for every single link or file you open, which quickly becomes annoying. Once you set a default, that popup disappears and the chosen app takes over silently.
Where defaults matter most
On a typical Realme phone, the most relevant default app categories are the browser, the messaging app, the phone dialer, the camera, and file-handling apps like PDF readers or gallery viewers. Each category can have its own default, independent from the others. Changing your default browser does not affect which app opens your text messages, for example.
This becomes especially noticeable after installing a new app that competes with a built-in one. Installing a third-party browser, messenger, or file manager often triggers a system prompt asking whether you want to use it as the new default, or Android silently keeps using the original app until you change the setting yourself.
Why the wrong app keeps opening
A common frustration is tapping a link and having it open in an app you did not intend to use, or having a photo always launch in the wrong gallery app. This usually happens because a default was set once, sometimes accidentally through a system dialog, and never changed afterward. Uninstalling the app that was set as default can also confuse the system, since Android may fall back to another installed app instead of asking again.
Realme UI groups these controls together so you do not have to hunt through multiple menus. Instead of resetting an app entirely, you can usually just pick a new default directly for the action type that is misbehaving, whether that is opening links, handling calls, or managing shared files.
When you should change a default
Switching a default app makes sense when you install a replacement app you trust more, when a preinstalled app crashes or behaves oddly, or when you simply prefer a different interface for daily tasks like messaging or browsing. It also helps after a factory reset or software update, since default assignments can sometimes revert to the original Realme UI apps.
Clearing an app's defaults is different from uninstalling it. Clearing only removes its status as the automatic choice for certain actions, while the app itself stays installed and can be set as default again later if needed.
Understanding this system saves time and avoids repeated pop-up prompts, especially on a phone where several apps can technically handle the same type of file or link.
