Screen brightness on a Realme phone is not just a single slider. It is a combination of manual control, an ambient light sensor, and software logic that decides how much power goes to the display panel at any given moment.
Manual brightness vs auto-brightness
The brightness slider found in the quick settings panel or in the display menu lets you set a fixed level by hand. This works well in stable lighting, such as a dim room at night or an office with constant overhead light.
Auto-brightness, sometimes labeled adaptive brightness, uses the light sensor near the front camera to measure ambient light and adjust the screen automatically. It also learns from your manual corrections over time, so if you consistently push the slider up in a certain room, the phone gradually applies that preference on its own in similar conditions.
Why brightness affects more than visibility
The display is one of the largest power consumers in any smartphone. Running the screen at maximum brightness constantly can noticeably shorten a full day of use, especially on models with high refresh rate panels that already draw more power.
On the other end, a screen set too dim in bright daylight forces your eyes to strain, which is uncomfortable and can make touch targets harder to read accurately.
Eye comfort and low-light features
Realme UI includes features built around brightness that go beyond the basic slider. A low-light or comfort mode reduces blue light emission and adds a warmer tint in the evening, which many users combine with a lower brightness level for reading before sleep.
Some panels also support a low-brightness dimming mode intended to reduce flicker at very low brightness levels, which matters for people sensitive to screen flicker in dark rooms.
When manual control beats auto mode
Auto-brightness is convenient, but it is not always accurate. In mixed lighting, such as sitting near a window with the sun moving behind clouds, the sensor can overcorrect and cause visible brightness jumps.
Switching to manual mode temporarily, then back to auto once conditions stabilize, often gives a steadier result than fighting the automatic adjustment.
Common brightness issues
If the screen does not seem to respond to auto-brightness at all, the light sensor may be blocked by a screen protector or case that covers the sensor area. If brightness drops unexpectedly during video playback or gaming, this is usually an unrelated power-saving behavior rather than a sensor malfunction.
