Focus modes and Do Not Disturb
Focus and Do Not Disturb features change how ring and notification sounds behave without requiring you to manually mute the phone. When active, these modes can block all sounds, allow only starred contacts through, or let repeated calls override silence, which is helpful for urgent situations. Understanding this layer is key: a correctly configured notification sound can still stay silent if a Focus mode is currently suppressing it.
Common issues worth knowing
Custom ringtones sometimes fail to appear in the sound picker because the audio file sits in the wrong storage folder or uses an unsupported format. Notifications can also stay silent even with a sound selected if the app's own in-app notification toggle is switched off, since that setting works independently from the system-level sound choice. Checking both the system sound settings and the app's internal notification preferences solves most silent-notification complaints.
Battery optimization settings can occasionally delay notifications from certain apps, which looks like a missing sound but is actually a delivery delay. Excluding an app from aggressive battery restrictions usually restores instant alerts.
