Smart Lock is a convenience layer built on top of your phone's main screen lock. Instead of typing a PIN, pattern, or password every single time, you define situations in which your Realme phone considers itself safe enough to stay unlocked or to unlock instantly. The underlying screen lock still exists and still protects the device whenever those trusted conditions are not met.
The feature relies on signals your phone can already detect: location, paired Bluetooth accessories, and physical movement. None of these signals are as strong as a fingerprint or a face scan, which is why Smart Lock is treated as a secondary convenience option rather than a replacement for biometric security.
What Smart Lock actually checks
Three detection methods are typically combined, depending on what you enable:
- Trusted places: your phone stays unlocked while you remain inside a location you marked, such as home or a workplace address, using GPS and network location.
- Trusted devices: pairing with a specific Bluetooth accessory, like a car system, smartwatch, or headphones, keeps the phone unlocked while that connection is active.
- On-body detection: motion sensors estimate whether the phone is still in your hand, pocket, or bag, and lock it again once it senses the phone has been set down.
Each method works independently. You can enable one, several, or none, and the phone unlocks as soon as any active trusted condition is satisfied.
Why this matters in daily use
The value of Smart Lock shows up in repetitive, low-risk moments: checking notifications at your desk, glancing at the screen while driving with your phone connected to the car, or picking the phone up right after putting it down. Without Smart Lock, every one of these moments requires a full unlock gesture. With it, the phone only asks for a PIN when the situation actually changes, for example when you leave the trusted location or disconnect from the paired device.
Limits and safety trade-offs
Trusted places rely on location accuracy, which can be imprecise indoors or in dense buildings, so the trusted radius is sometimes larger than expected. Trusted devices unlock the phone for anyone holding it as long as the Bluetooth connection is active, which matters if you share a car or lend an accessory. On-body detection cannot always tell the difference between you and someone else carrying the phone in a bag.
Smart Lock also depends on background location and Bluetooth permissions staying enabled, and on Google Play services running normally. If either is restricted through battery optimization or permission changes, trusted conditions stop being detected and the phone falls back to asking for your normal unlock method.
A practical way to use it
Treat Smart Lock as a convenience for a small number of genuinely low-risk spots and devices rather than a blanket setting. Reviewing which places and devices are marked as trusted from time to time keeps the feature useful without quietly weakening your phone's security over months of use.
