Smart Sidebar is a floating shortcut panel built into Realme UI. It lives as a small tab on the edge of the display and can be pulled out over almost any screen, including full-screen apps and most games. Its purpose is simple: cut down the time spent minimizing one app just to open another.
Instead of returning to the home screen, you swipe the tab inward and a strip of app icons appears on top of whatever you are currently using. Tapping one of those icons opens the app in a floating window or in split screen, depending on the app and how you launch it. This makes Smart Sidebar useful for checking a chat app while watching a video, replying to a message during a call, or keeping a notes app within reach while browsing.
What the panel actually contains
By default, the sidebar holds a handful of frequently used apps, but the list is not fixed. You can add or remove apps depending on what you actually use often, and reorder them so the ones you need most sit at the top. Alongside apps, the panel usually includes quick tools such as a screenshot shortcut, a screen recorder, and sometimes a screen-clean or split-screen toggle, so you are not limited to launching apps alone.
Why it matters for multitasking
The main value of Smart Sidebar is reducing interruptions. On a phone without this feature, switching tasks usually means leaving the current app entirely, losing your place in a video, a game, or a long scroll session. With the sidebar, the original app keeps running in the background while the second app opens in a floating or split view, so you do not lose context.
This is particularly relevant during gaming. Many games support the sidebar overlay, letting you check a message or glance at a walkthrough without pausing or exiting the match. Not every game allows this by default, since some titles block overlays to prevent interference, so availability can vary by app.
Things worth knowing before relying on it
Not every app behaves well in the floating or split window that Smart Sidebar opens. Some apps are designed only for full-screen use and will simply expand back to full screen once tapped, ignoring the floating mode. This is an app limitation rather than a bug in the sidebar itself.
The position and visibility of the tab can also be adjusted. If the handle gets in the way during specific tasks, such as reading or drawing near the screen edge, it can be moved to a different height or hidden temporarily. Battery and performance impact from the sidebar itself is minimal, since it only becomes active when you pull it open.
Once you know which apps you check most often during other tasks, curating the sidebar list turns it from a generic shortcut bar into a personal quick-access panel that actually matches your habits.
