Samsung: Set the Space Bar Hold Action

If holding down the space bar on your Samsung keyboard triggers cursor control when you actually wanted voice input, or does nothing at all, the touch-and-hold behavior is set to an option that does not match how you type. Samsung Keyboard lets you assign a specific action to a long press of the space bar. Picking the wrong one makes text editing slower instead of faster.

Space Bar Hold Action auf Samsung

On Samsung phones, a long press on the space bar can trigger a shortcut instead of simply inserting spaces. Samsung Keyboard controls this behavior through a dedicated setting, and it offers three options: No action, Cursor control, and Voice input.

Cursor control turns the space bar into a trackpad for moving the text cursor, which is useful when editing long messages but confusing if you expect a regular space. Voice input starts dictation the moment you hold the bar down, which can be disruptive if you tend to rest your thumb there while typing.

To change the assigned action, go to Tap on SettingsTap on General managementTap on Samsung Keyboard settingsTap on Swipe, touch, and feedbackTap on Touch and hold space barChoose an option.

Selecting No action disables the gesture completely, so a long press just inserts extra spaces. This setting only affects Samsung Keyboard; switching to a different keyboard app resets the behavior to that app's own defaults.

Frequently asked questions

With Cursor control selected, holding the space bar turns it into a small trackpad. Sliding your thumb left or right moves the text cursor without needing to tap directly on the screen.
