Turn On or Off Auto Download for Software Updates over Wi-Fi auf Samsung
Auto download over Wi-Fi tells your Samsung device to fetch new firmware packages as soon as it connects to a trusted wireless network. The download runs in the background, but the update stays queued until you confirm the installation yourself.
Samsung enables this behavior to save mobile data. Wi-Fi is treated as the cheaper, faster option, so the system grabs available updates whenever a Wi-Fi connection is present, regardless of whether you opened the Software update screen.
Downloaded update files can take up several hundred megabytes of internal storage while they wait for installation. On devices with limited free space, this can trigger low-storage warnings before you ever tap install.
To change the behavior:
Settings ➤ Software update ➤ enable or disable Auto download over Wi-Fi
Turning the option off does not remove your ability to check for updates manually. You can still open Software update and tap Download and install whenever you choose, without the phone pre-downloading anything on its own.
If your main concern is unexpected storage use rather than mobile data, disabling auto download is usually the better fix. Restricting background data for the Software update app instead can also block manual checks, which is not what most people want.
