Samsung: Turn the Camera Flash On or Off

Photos taken indoors or in low light often turn out dark or grainy because the flash stays in automatic mode and only fires when the camera decides it is needed. If you want the flash to fire on every shot, or stay off completely for a more natural look, you need to take it out of Auto mode. This also affects how the flash behaves while recording video.

Turn Camera Flash On or Off auf Samsung

The Samsung Camera app has three flash states: Auto, On, and Off. In Auto mode, the camera measures the ambient light and decides on its own whether to fire the flash for a photo. That logic works well in mixed lighting but often misfires in dim rooms, backlit scenes, or while recording video, where the flash behaves differently than in photo mode.

To take manual control, use the flash icon in the viewfinder: Tap on CameraTap on FlashEnable or disable Flash. Tapping the icon cycles through the three states without leaving the camera screen.

Forcing the flash on guarantees extra light for close-up shots, documents, or barcodes, but it can wash out skin tones and create harsh shadows. Forcing it off keeps colors natural in low light at the cost of more noise or a slower shutter, which can cause blur. Leave the setting on Auto for everyday photography and only switch to a fixed state when you already know the lighting conditions.

On many mid-range and high-end Samsung phones, low-light software processing already compensates for weak lighting, so the flash is used less often than on older or budget models.

Frequently asked questions

Some Samsung phones automatically override the flash when Power saving mode or Ultra power saving mode is active, since the flash draws extra battery. Turn off power saving mode, then check the setting again through Tap on CameraTap on Flash.
