Samsung: Turn Google Drive Backup On or Off

If your Samsung phone seems to back up the same data twice, Google Drive backup might be running alongside Samsung Cloud without you noticing. This can quietly eat into your Google storage or leave you unsure which backup actually holds your latest photos and app data. Knowing where this toggle sits helps you decide which backup system to rely on.

Turn Google Drive Backup On or Off auf Samsung

Samsung phones can run two backup systems at the same time: Samsung Cloud and Google Drive backup, tied to your Google account. Both create automatic copies of your data, but they cover different things and sync on different schedules. That is often why photos, contacts, or app data suddenly take up more space than expected in your Google Drive.

Google Drive backup on a Samsung device typically covers app data, call history, contacts, calendar entries, and device settings linked to your Google account. It runs independently from Samsung Cloud, so having both active can mean the same information is stored twice, in two separate places.

To check or change this setting, go to Tap on SettingsTap on Accounts and backupTap on Back up dataEnable or disable Back up to Google Drive. Turn the toggle on to start automatic backups to your Google account, or switch it off if you only want to rely on Samsung Cloud or a manual routine.

Disabling Google Drive backup does not delete backups already stored in your Google account. It only stops new automatic backups from being created going forward. If you switch to a new phone later, having this enabled can make restoring app data and settings faster during setup.

Frequently asked questions

No. Turning off Back up to Google Drive only stops new backups from being created. Backups already saved to your Google account stay in place until you delete them manually.
