Samsung: Allow App Installs from Unknown Sources

Downloaded an .apk file straight from a website and your Samsung phone refuses to install it? That block comes from the system default that only trusts apps delivered through the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store. Since Android 9, this permission is no longer a single global switch, it has to be granted separately for every app that tries to install something.

Allow Unknown App Installations auf Samsung

When you install an app from anywhere other than the Play Store or Galaxy Store, Samsung treats the source as unverified. Since Android 9, the system no longer offers one global toggle for this. Instead, permission is granted separately to the specific app you used to open the .apk file, such as a browser or file manager.

This per-app model exists because the old single switch made every installation source trusted at once, which was a security risk. Now only the app you actually approve can trigger installs, while every other app stays blocked.

Where to allow the source

Open SettingsAppsMenuSpecial accessInstall unknown apps. Pick the app you used to download or open the .apk file, then enable Allow from this source. To block it again later, return to the same screen and disable the toggle for that app.

If the .apk still fails after enabling this, check whether the file itself is corrupted or built for a different Android version. This setting only removes the source block, it does not fix broken or incompatible packages.

Frequently asked questions

Allow the app that actually triggers the install prompt. If you downloaded the .apk in a browser and tapped it there, enable Allow from this source for the browser. If you opened it later from a file manager, allow that app instead.
