Samsung: Switch Between One-Handed and Floating Keyboard Mode

Typing with one hand on a large screen turns into a stretching exercise when the Samsung keyboard stays locked to its full-width standard layout. The one-handed keyboard and floating keyboard fix reachability, but the toggle sits buried inside a settings menu most people never open.

Change Keyboard Mode on Samsung auf Samsung

The Samsung keyboard defaults to full-width standard mode, which spans the entire screen no matter how you hold the phone. On larger displays this pushes the far side of the keyboard out of thumb reach, making one-handed typing uncomfortable.

Samsung Keyboard settings hides two alternative layouts. The one-handed keyboard is narrower and can be pinned to either the left or right edge. The floating keyboard detaches completely and can be dragged and resized anywhere over an app. Both layouts are set separately for portrait and landscape orientation, so a different mode can apply depending on how you hold the device.

To switch modes, open SettingsGeneral managementSamsung Keyboard settingsMode, then set the keyboard mode for Portrait and/or Landscape view.

If typing still feels cramped after switching to one-handed mode, adjusting the keyboard width or height in the same menu usually solves it faster than switching modes again. Floating mode covers less screen space but can overlap input fields on smaller displays, so it is worth testing both layouts before setting one as default.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The Mode screen inside Samsung Keyboard settings configures Portrait and Landscape view independently, so a one-handed layout in portrait can coexist with a standard layout in landscape.
