Samsung: Rename a Contact Group in Contacts

If a contact group on your Samsung phone still shows the wrong name, the fix only applies to groups you created yourself. Default groups like Family, Colleagues or Friends cannot be renamed, which often confuses users trying to clean up their address book.

Rename Contact Group auf Samsung

Samsung's Contacts app lets you sort contacts into groups, but the rename option only works for groups you created yourself. Default categories such as Family, Colleagues or Friends are locked by the system and always keep their original label.

To rename a group you added manually, open ContactsOpen the MenuChoose a GroupTap on Edit. Tap the current group name, then Enter a Name and tap Save to confirm the change.

If the Edit option is missing or greyed out for a group, that group is a default one and cannot be renamed this way. In that case, create a new group with the name you want and move the affected contacts into it manually.

Renaming only changes the label shown in the group list. It does not affect any contact details, phone numbers, or the calls and messages already linked to those contacts.

Frequently asked questions

These are default groups created by the system, not by you. Samsung locks their names permanently, so the Edit option does not apply to them, even though it works for custom groups.
