Samsung: Set Swipe Action for the Camera Shutter Button

Swiping the shutter button sideways on a Samsung camera usually fires off a rapid burst of shots, even if you only wanted one quick series. If you would rather get an instant GIF from that same gesture, the camera app hides a setting most people never touch.

Set Swipe Action for the Shutter Button auf Samsung

On Samsung phones, swiping the shutter button to the side is a shortcut for rapid shooting. By default this gesture triggers continuous shooting, which fills your gallery with dozens of near-identical photos when you only wanted a quick series or a short animation.

The behavior is controlled by a dedicated camera setting, not a system-wide gesture. You can switch the swipe action so it creates a GIF instead of a burst, which is useful if you regularly capture short motion clips for messaging apps rather than still photos.

To change it, open CameraSettingsSwipe Shutter button to, then choose Take burst shot or Create GIF.

Pick Take burst shot if you still want rapid stills but prefer confirming the gesture explicitly. Pick Create GIF if you want the swipe to record a short clip and convert it automatically.

This setting only affects the swipe gesture. Tapping and holding the shutter button keeps its own separate behavior for continuous shooting, so switching this option will not change how tap-and-hold works.

If you never use the swipe gesture at all, this setting has no visible effect until you try it, so there is no downside to changing it once and testing the result.

Frequently asked questions

No. The Swipe Shutter button to option only affects the sideways swipe gesture. Tap-and-hold continuous shooting works independently of this setting.
