Xiaomi: Enable or Disable a Keyboard in Language Settings

A new keyboard downloaded from the Play Store does not automatically show up next to Gboard on your Xiaomi phone. Until you switch it on in the input settings, it stays hidden from the language switcher and typing keeps defaulting to the old keyboard. This usually happens with third-party layouts, handwriting keyboards, or apps installed after the initial setup.

Turn a Keyboard On or Off auf Xiaomi

MIUI keeps every installed keyboard disabled by default, even after a successful download from the Play Store. Android treats each keyboard as a separate input method that has to be granted permission before it can appear in the switcher or become the default typing option.

This behavior protects your data, since an enabled keyboard can technically read what you type. It also explains why a freshly installed app is not enough on its own: the system still needs your explicit confirmation.

Where to turn a keyboard on or off

Go to Tap on SettingsTap on Additional settingsTap on Languages & inputTap on Manage keyboards. Here every installed keyboard is listed with a toggle.

Switch the toggle to activate or deactivate the keyboard you need, then confirm the security prompt with Tap on OK. Once enabled, the keyboard becomes selectable in the language switcher while typing.

If you only want to remove a keyboard from the switcher without uninstalling the app, disabling it here is enough. To fully replace Gboard as your default, you still need to select the new keyboard separately after enabling it.

Frequently asked questions

It is likely still disabled. Enable it under Tap on SettingsTap on Additional settingsTap on Languages & inputTap on Manage keyboards, then confirm with Tap on OK.
