Xiaomi: Change the System Language

If your Xiaomi phone ended up in a language you cannot read, or you simply want to switch after setup, you do not need to go through the activation wizard again. The system language lives in its own settings menu, separate from the one-time language screen you saw when you first turned on the phone. This also affects keyboard suggestions and how some apps display their text.

Change System Language auf Xiaomi

The language you picked during the first setup of your Xiaomi phone is not permanent. MIUI stores it as a regular system setting, so you can change it anytime without resetting the device or losing data.

This matters if you bought the phone in a different region, borrowed it from someone else, or accidentally tapped the wrong language during activation. It also matters if you want the interface in one language but your keyboard or a specific app in another, since the system language only controls menus, notifications, and default apps.

Where to find the language setting

Go to SettingsAdditional settingsLanguages & inputLanguages. From the list, tap the language you want to use, then confirm with OK. The interface switches immediately, no restart needed.

If the list does not show your language, check whether it needs to be added first from the same Languages screen. Third-party apps with their own language setting, such as messengers or browsers, are not affected by this change and need to be adjusted separately inside the app.

Frequently asked questions

Some apps use their own language setting instead of following the system. Check the app's internal settings menu, since changing the language under Languages & input only affects MIUI menus and apps that rely on the system default.
