Xiaomi: Set Default Account for New Contacts

If you keep getting asked which account to save a new contact to on your Xiaomi phone, MIUI has no default target set. This happens when Google Account, Mi Account, and one or both SIM cards are all active on the same device. Every save then triggers a manual account pick, which slows down quick contact entry.

Set Default Account for New Contacts auf Xiaomi

MIUI asks which account to use for a new contact whenever more than one account is linked to your phone. This includes a Google Account, a Mi Account, and SIM 1 or SIM 2, since each can store its own separate contact list.

Without a default, the phone shows a selection prompt on every single save. Setting a fixed default account removes that extra tap and sends every new contact straight to the account you choose.

To change it, open Tap on ContactsOpen the MenuTap on SettingsTap on Default account for new contactsChoose an Account.

Pick the account you use most for syncing, usually your Google Account if you rely on backups across devices, or your Mi Account if you stay inside the Xiaomi ecosystem. Choosing a SIM card instead keeps contacts local to that SIM and out of any cloud sync.

If you actually want to choose per contact, for example to keep work and personal entries on separate accounts, leave the default unset instead and pick manually each time. Switching the default later does not move contacts already saved to another account; it only affects new entries going forward.

Frequently asked questions

None. Changing the setting under Default account for new contacts only affects contacts you save after the change. Existing contacts stay linked to whichever account they were originally saved to.
