Xiaomi: Set Default Apps for Music, Links and Files

If your Xiaomi phone keeps asking which app to use every time you open a song, a link, or a photo, no default app is set for that file type. MIUI stores these preferences per action, and once none is chosen, the selection prompt reappears every time you tap the file.

Change Default Apps auf Xiaomi

On a Xiaomi phone, the app chooser pops up whenever the system does not know which app should handle a specific action, such as playing a song, opening a link, or displaying an image. MIUI remembers these choices as default apps, but only after you confirm one manually or tick a remember option in the picker dialog.

If you tapped Just once instead of Always in that dialog, or if you cleared an app's defaults earlier, the prompt returns on every attempt. Setting a fixed default app removes that extra tap and speeds up everyday actions like opening music files or web links.

To change it, go to Tap on SettingsTap on AppsTap on Manage appsOpen the MenuTap on Default appsChoose an option to set the default app for that action.

This setting only applies to the action category you select, such as music playback or browsing. It does not affect other file types, so you may need to repeat the steps for each category where the picker still appears.

If an app is missing from the list of available options, check that it is installed and not disabled in Manage apps. Reinstalling the app usually restores it as a selectable default.

Frequently asked questions

This usually happens when you tapped an option marked Just once instead of a permanent choice. Go back to Default apps and select the app again, making sure you pick the option that sets it as the standard, not a one-time use.
