Xiaomi: Delete an Album in the Gallery App

Deleting an album on your Xiaomi phone also deletes every photo and video still stored inside it. This catches a lot of people off guard when they just wanted to tidy up their Gallery app and end up losing media they meant to keep. Knowing which albums are safe to remove and which ones hold originals is key before you tap delete.

Delete an Album in Gallery auf Xiaomi

The Gallery app on Xiaomi phones sorts photos and videos into albums. Some albums are created automatically, such as Camera or Screenshots, while others are custom folders you made yourself or that came from apps like WhatsApp.

Deleting an album removes the album entry and every file stored inside it, not just the folder shell. If a photo only exists in that one album, it is gone once you confirm the deletion. If the same photo also appears in another album or was backed up separately, only that copy inside the deleted album disappears.

To remove an album, open Tap on GalleryTap on AlbumsTap and hold an AlbumTap on DeleteTap on OK. The album and its contents move to the device trash for a limited time before permanent removal, depending on how your Gallery app handles recently deleted items.

If you only want to declutter without losing media, move the photos to another album first, then delete the now-empty original. This is the safer option for albums tied to messaging apps or downloads where files are not stored anywhere else on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Check the recently deleted section inside the Gallery app first, since removed albums and their photos often stay there for a short period before permanent deletion. If that period has passed, recovery is usually not possible unless you had a separate backup.
