Xiaomi: Turn Emergency Location Service On or Off

If first responders cannot pinpoint your position during an emergency call or text, Emergency Location Service on your Xiaomi phone may be switched off. This feature sends your current GPS position automatically whenever you dial an emergency number, but it only works if the setting is active and your wireless carrier supports it. Some users disable it by accident while adjusting location permissions, which delays help in a real emergency.

Turn Emergency Location Service (ELS) On or Off auf Xiaomi

Emergency Location Service (ELS) is a background function on Xiaomi phones running MIUI on Android. It transmits your current position to emergency responders the moment you place an emergency call or send an emergency text, independent of your regular location permissions for apps.

If ELS is switched off, your phone still lets the call through, but responders receive no automatic position data. That can slow down rescue efforts, especially if you cannot describe your location verbally.

To check or change the setting, open SettingsLocationEmergency Location Service and toggle Send ELS Location. Enabling it does not drain noticeable battery, since it only activates during an actual emergency call or message.

Leave ELS enabled unless your carrier explicitly advises otherwise or you have privacy concerns that outweigh the safety benefit. Disabling it does not affect normal GPS use in maps or other apps, since ELS operates independently of standard location services.

Frequently asked questions

No. Emergency Location Service is separate from the location permissions used by navigation or map apps. Disabling Send ELS Location under SettingsLocationEmergency Location Service only stops the automatic position transmission during emergency calls or texts.
